Everybody is talking about EFA’s. What do they look like?

Fatty acids form an integral part of each cell wall, and helps shift and maintain the correct pH in our bodies. Fatty acids also play an important role in maintaining healthy hormones and a well-balanced nervous system.

Essential fatty acids (EFA’s), also referred to as vitamin F, are the fatty acids, which cannot be made by the body and must be supplied through the diet. All fats are made of basic elements called carbon, oxygen and hydrogen. These are arranged in molecules called fatty acids. The carbon chain carries hydrogen atoms, which we can compare to a drinking straw, to which ping- pong balls are attached. Studies to confirm the need for fatty acids for healthy cell function have been held up for many decades because instruments that could analyze the fats in biological samples did not exist until the last quarter of the twentieth century. These fatty acids are the main structural parts of every cell membrane in the body, thus necessary for healthy cell function and for all the regulators that control the body’s well–being.

Disturbance in the integrity of the cell wall can cause malnutrition, and contribute to many serious diseases such as cancer, manic depression, emotional problems, headaches, irritable bowel, menopausal discomfort, arteriosclerosis (plaque built up in arteries), cancer, diabetes, obesity, chronic inflammations, chronic skin problems, infertility, enlarged prostate, sudden infant death syndrome, autism, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, and mental problems such as mood swings, epilepsy, schizophrenia, hallucinations, psychosis, agoraphobia (fear of open spaces), paranoia, and early ageing.

Low levels of omega-3 may contribute to behavioral and learning difficulties in children and adults with ADD / ADHD. A deficiency of essential fatty acids is linked to memory loss, visual problems, and short attention span, which mean impaired ability in reading and comprehending written words. According to research the DHA in fish oil seems to be the crucial omega-3 for babies, children and adults suffering with attention span, behavioral and learning ability problems. The Durham Schools Trail

Omega-3 fatty acids and the link towards Learning/ concentration / hyperactivity syndrome with children and adults have been proven scientifically!

The first published results of this ground- breaking double blind placebo-controlled trail show significant improvements in children with learning and behavioural conditions when taking omega oil. The trail funded by Durham County Council in association with Oxford University, will add to the current debate that nutrition can improve children’s performance in the classroom.

The findings were published in the American journal Pediatrics and a second paper in another peer-reviewed journal is in press. The research shows that the natural omega oils in omega oils can have an impact on ADHD similar to that of prescribed stimulant medication. The Durham Schools Trail involved more than 120 children aged 6 – 12 years from varying socio-economic backgrounds, who were selected on the basis of a diagnosis of dyspraxia, many with accompanying conditions such as ADHD and dyslexia. Half took the omega oil and half were on placebo (olive oil) with both participants and researches blinded to which format they were on.

After 3 months, the group on active treatment made highly significant improvements in all key Global behavioural scales, which include the three diagnostic features of ADHD; inattention, hyperactivity and impulsivity. The results in Pediatrics showed that some 40% of the children made dramatic improvements in reading and spelling.

There has been a lot of interest in this study because of it’s groundbreaking nature. This randomized, double -blind placebo-controlled trail is the most comprehensive and far-reaching study ever conducted into the relationship between fatty acids and specific learning conditions.

Danger in the Daily Chips and Margarine on your Toebie!

Due to the intake of chips, hydrogenated oils and margarines we get an imbalance of too much omega–6 in our bodies and these unhealthy foods also form trans fatty acids due to manufacturing at high temperatures. These trans fatty acids build up as poisons in our system, block our hormonal receptors and shift our pH or acid balance. The Science behind it all

Omega-3, 6 and 9 fatty acids

Omega-3 or Ecosapentaenoic acid (EPA)

In saturated fats (such as found in beef, lamb and meat) the carbons are completely saturated with hydrogen – the carbon chain (straw) is completely covered with atoms (ping-pong balls). These saturated fats form a straight chain that bunches together, forming solid white fat, which does not melt at room temperature (unhealthy fats).

In mono-unsaturated fats (such as found in olive oil and sesame oil) two of the hydrogen atoms (or ping pong balls) have been removed from adjacent carbon atoms in the middle of the 18-carbon chain, with the result that the chain (straw) kinks. These kinks cause a weakened link, which results in a less solid structure, and a more fluid texture at room temperature (a healthy fat). Omega-3 fatty acids are more liquid at room temperature and thus healthier than omega-6.

Poly-unsaturated fats, such as omega 3 fatty acids, have kinks at the third carbon plus two more kinks else where in the chain. Omega 6 fatty acids have the first of two kinks at the sixth carbon. The fewer hydrogen atoms (ping-pong balls), the more kinks in the chain (as with omega-3), the more fluid the fat is, and the healthier the fat is to our bodies.

1. Alpha linelenic acid (ALA)

The pre-cursor to Omega -3 fatty acids, Alpha linolenic acid (ALA) is found naturally in flaxseed, pumpkin seed, walnuts, hemp, dark green leafy vegetables and soya beans. An enzyme plus co-factors such as vitamins and minerals found in Mineral-wise and ZoëB-co are needed to convert ALA into omega-3 Eicosapentaenoic Acid (EPA) and Docosahexaenoic Acid (DHA).

Many people may due to a deficiency in this enzyme, have trouble converting the ALA (the short chain omega-3) into DHA (a longer chain omega-3).

2. Eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA)

EPA is found naturally only in dark oily fish such as herring, mackerel, sardines, salmon, fresh tuna, and halibut. This is the real omega -3 fatty acid, which leads to Docosahexaenoic Acid (DHA), also found only in dark oily fish. Our bodies should be able to do the conversion of ALA into EPA and DHA, but as already mentioned less than 10% people are able to, as the enzymes and co-factors seem to be lacking.

3. Docosahexaenoic acid (DHA):

Dark oily fish, and fish oil is, besides breast milk, the only natural source of this fatty acid. Docosahexanoic acid is a long chain poly-unsaturated fatty acid.

DHA comprises 25% of the brain cells and up to 60% of the retina cells in the eye, and is a major structural component for the development of the brain and the development of a foetus. This is one of the missing links towards neurosystem problems and even schizophrenia. DHA is also the link for improved night vision.

DHA is the crucial precursor towards a prostaglandin series of hormones, for the prevention of inflammatory conditions, platelet aggregation and many more processes in the body. If our hormonal system is imbalanced, we will struggle with immunity and chronic health problems, of some kind.

4. Prostaglandin series

This is a series of hormones that protects us from inflammatory conditions such as muscle pains, arthritis, colon problems and cancer. It is also one of the links towards protection from blood clotting. If our red blood cells do not carry sufficient oxygen, other health problems start to occur.

5. Arachidonic acid (AA) is the end product of omega-6 metabolism, which leads to pro-inflammatory (leucotrienes) prostaglandins causing platelet aggregation. The intake of animal proteins and dairy products has an influence on the pathway towards Leucotrienes (or pro-inflammatories). If a person suffers with arthritis and / or gout, and reduces their intake of animal protein and cuts out dairy products, they will experience less pain.

Once sufficient prostaglandins are manufactured, our body receives the protection from inflammatory conditions. Prostaglandins also prevent overproduction of substances in the omega-6 metabolic pathway, which form inflammatories, causing pain, arthritis etc.

ADD / ADHD children, expectant mothers and those with neurosystem problems may benefit more from fish oil as opposed to flax oil, and may need a product containing more of the DHA fatty acid than ALA and GLA. This is where the combination in the product, Omega –wise, supplies all our needs – containing fish oil, olive oil (omega 9) and grape seed oil (Vitamin E, sterols and antioxidants).

Omega-6 fatty acids or gamma linolenic acid (GLA)

The vitamins and minerals found in Mineral-wise and ZoëB-co, are needed for activation of the enzymes to form both omega 3 and omega 6 fatty acids from the precursors (ALA and LA) in flax seed oil. For example, vegetarians or vegans, who only consume flax seed oil, should make sure they take both Mineral-wise and ZoëB-co as well as supplementing their pancreatin enzymes. Personally I always knew that vegans may safely consider taking our fish oil combination (see page x) to make sure they get a good supply of DHA, which is too often a missing link towards healing. (Remember there is no protein in this oil! – It is the protein content of animals that is not beneficial to humans – as we do not need that much!)

The usage of Omega-6 fatty acids or gamma linolenic acid (GLA):

A built up of omega-6 (GLA) in our bodies, by eating chips too often, using margarines and by intake of too much animal protein, may cause pro-inflammatory effects, gradual poisoning of our bodies, hormonal, neurosystem and immunity disturbances. The correct balance between omega 3 and 6 is vital. Omega-wise contains ready-made EPA and DHA, which prevents an imbalance of fatty acids in the body.

Both AA and DHA attract considerable interest from researchers, partly because they influence signal transduction. Both EPA and DGLA seem to influence normal brain development and function.

Previous studies suggested that omega-6 might be inactive in ADHD. One study by University of Oxford and Imperial College School of medicine, London (Richardson and Puri) showed statistically lower scores for ADHD related symptoms when supplemented with both fatty acids. It’s important to know that children who received margarines and chips (and some do on a daily base) might have an imbalance of these two fatty acids, and the trans fatty acids which form in the manufacturing of these products is a poison to the system. We therefore suggest a product, which contain less omega-6 than 3, to keep balance.

Many people may not find all the benefits they need with the usage of flaxseed oil – for example, your skin problem may still exist even after long-term usage of your Omega-3, 6, 9 product or circulation problems may not be sorted our. It may be that your body cannot convert the primary Omega-3 fatty acid (ALA) into the longer chain Omega-3’s (EPA and DHA) therefore you may need to try our fish oil combination. This combination has proven to be more stable and lasts longer in the refrigerator.

As long-term healing takes place, the requirement for oil, vitamins and minerals often declines. Find the lowest effective dose that you need after six months. We suggest one to two teaspoons of Omega-wise per day.
