Significance of Pomegranates in the Spirit and in the Physical body

Significance of Pomegranates in the Spirit and in the Physical body
By Suret Morkel

Pomegranates

Punica granatum is a fruit-bearing deciduous shrub or small tree,
growing to 5-8m tall.

Where from?
Pomegranates come originally from Iran up to the Himalayas in
northern India, and now also From Israel and Turkey and the mid-east countries.

Scriptures referring to pomegranates
Exodus 28:33 – In the Tabernacle of Moses the priest had on the hem, embroidery of pomegranates, and bells were stiched there as well. Together with the colours of the priesly garments (blue, white, red) our priestly walk in Him is signified through pomegranates, and also our righteousness and holiness in Him.

I Kings 7:18 – Pomegranates decorated the capitals of King Solomon’s Temple’s pillars – our Kingdom walk. Also our righteousness and holiness in Him.

Numbers 13:23 – spies brought back pomegranates from the land of Canaan – our fruitfulness, abundance, blessings and favor that God bestows upon us.

Deuteronomy 8:8 – “Good” signified: One of the choice produce of the promised land. “A land of wheat and barley, and of the vine, and the fig-tree, and of the pomegranate.”

Haggai 2:19 – Good and blessings signified: ‘Is the seed still in the barn?’ – not fruited? Yet we stand in faith that God blesses us from this day.

Joel 1:12 – Pomegranates signifies joy, for when the vine, the fig, the pomegranate and the palm tree are withered, then joy withers from man.

Song of Solomon 4:3 – beauty and openness towards our bridegroom – and sharing with others the pips that we recieve.

Meaning of Colour and Sections of the Pomegranate
613 red pips/seeds: 613 seeds = 613 commandments in Jewish tradition (613 = positive commandments -to perform certain actions). In the prayer shawl of the Jew there are some knotted fringes (tzitzit) and tassels also total 613, reminding the wearer of God’s commandments. Jesus gave Himself as a red sacrifice (on the cross). We are Jesus’ seed – and our days are prolonged (like seed planted to bring forth), and so are the days of our children.
See- through pearl white skin around the seeds: Isa 53:10 “He – bruised (bled) for us, made our sins white.

Outer Skin – purpleish: Suggestive of God’s manifestation and royalty.

White membranes: white = our righteousness in Christ.

Twelve sections- when cut through: Eph. 3:10, that so beautifully resembles the multi-phaseted pomegranate fruit, “ …the complicated, many-sided wisdom of God with all its infinite variety and innumerable aspects…”

Harvesting the Pomegranate – A Special Prayer

Harvest time of the Pomegranates coincides with the Day of Atonement (just after Rosh Hashana). At Rosh Hashana, a special prayer is recited over a pomegranate.
“May it be Your will O Lord our God and the God of Our Fathers, that our good deeds will increase like the seeds of the pomegranate.”

Rosh Hashana is a Feast that God installed for His people during Sept/ Oct each year. Trumpets are blown (called the Feast of Trumpets) to announce the Ten Days of Awe (a solemn feast) where the people are asked to make right with God. The Jews are in repentance for ten days, and on their new Years Day (Tenth Day of Awe), the High Priest makes atonement on behalf of all the people’s sin. This is a Holy day installed by God.

Today Jesus is our continuous intercessor, making atonement on behalf of our sin. He will come with the sound of a trumpet and we will all be taken with Him (the bride whose lamp is full and burning). We may celebrate this Feast with the Jews, but we need to know that Jesus came to break the Veil, so that we all become His royal priesthood, walking into His presence whenever we want to, and standing intercessors on behalf of our own and our people’s sin.

Hereby the New Testament version of Bells and Pomegranates.

Teaching of Bells and Pomegranates

The Bells and Pomegranates were sown onto the hem of the garment of the priesthood. As the bells sways against the pomegranates, it makes the clinging bell-like sound, for everybody to hear when the high priest enters the presence of God in the Holiest.
Our Spiritual walk today, also need to be heard by others, through the gifts of the Spirit (1 Cor 12 – a sounding bell chapter), and through love (1 Cor 13 – a quiet pomegranate chapter) and edification or prophecy (1 Cor 14 – a sounding bell chapter).
1 Cor 12 is all about the manifestations of the gifts, that should never go without love
1 Cor. 12:7-10. This is a ‘sounding ‘ – bell chapter. Our gifts sound loud to the world.

“But the manifestation of the Spirit is given to each one for the profit of all: for to one is given the word of wisdom through the Spirit, to another the word of knowledge through the same Spirit, to another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healings by the same Spirit, to another the working of miracles, to another prophecy, to another discerning of spirits, to another different kinds of tongues, to another the interpretation of tongues.”
1 Cor 13. This is a ‘pomegranate’ chapter – this gift of love is needed whilst operating in the ‘bell’. If not our ‘bells’ may be ‘clinging’ as mentioned in Ch 13.
1 Cor 14. A ‘sounding ‘ bell – chapter again. Operating in tongues is good, but edification and prophesy is more important than tongues – speak life into ‘dead bones’ as Isaiah did – in Ch 37.
The prophet Joel prophecied that the Holy Spirit will be poured upon all men, sons and daughters will prophecy, …and all the wonders that will happen before the second coming of the Lord. To walk with Jesus, is to walk in the spirit of prophecy. Rev 19:10 says, “The testimony of Jesus is the Spirit of prophecy.” As we walk closer to Him, in a deeper intimacy, a true relationship with Him, He bestows upon us the gifts of the Spirit (eg. prophecy) and some He ordains into offices (Prophetic, Evangelism, Pastoral, Teaching and Apostleship).

More about the Significance of Pomegranates

Goodness and coming blessings:Deut 8:8/1 Kings 7:15-22 “200 pomegranates in rows on each of the capitals pillars all around and on top of the pillars of the tempel of Solomon. The tops of the pillars were in the shape of lilies.

Pomegranates stood for good
Flowers (lilies) stood for truth.

Coming blessings signified by the pomegranate – not yet bearing fruit:
Hag 2:19 as well, “Although the seed is not yet in the barn, and the vine, and the fig-tree, and the pomegranate and olive not yielded fruit – from this day I bless you.
Wheat, barley, and the seed in the barn signify celestial things internal and external;
The vine, the fig-tree, and the pomegranate signify spiritual and natural things.

Pomegranate (whole): Beauty and openness signified by the pomegranate:
Song of Solomon 4:3 – beauty and openness towards our Bridegroom. Sharing with others.

From reading Song of Solomon we need to see the church as the Bride of Christ, and then ourselves as His bride (intimacy with Him) and the bride/groom of our our earthly spouse.

Pomegrante (cut open):

Tender emotions of the Bride (become healed) signified by the pomegranate – cut open:
Chapter 4 describes our bridegroom taking note of us, describing our beauty.
Vs 3: lips – like a strand of scarlet
Mouth – lovely
Temples behind your veil – like a piece of pomegranate. An open pomegranate shows seeds – red and sweet. This is symbolic of the bride’s tender emotions and her sensitivity to not grieve her lover. The Veil represents her intimacy, hidden with Christ in God (Col 3:3). Pips and sap is healthy and have specific healing qualities. As the fruit is cut open – it forms a heart shape even, with 4 divisions.

Pomegranates amidst many other plants Growing in her emotions and maturity (various plants described – including the pomegranate):
Songs 4:13-14 – nine fruits of the spirit – growing in her emotions and maturity of her spirit.

“Your plants are an orchard of pomegranates…fruits…henna with spikenard, saffron, calamus, cinnamon, all trees of frankincense, myrrh, aloes, chief spices.”

Nine plants mentioned are parallel to the nine fruits of the Holy Spirit (healing of her emotions – to operate more and more in these fruits), and maturity of her soul and spirit. She becomes an orchard (her life and her ministry). Jesus breaks open the pomegranates (her emotions), so that first He and then others can taste her sweetness. She becomes emotionally transparent.

Pomegranate coming into bloom: Fruitfulness signified by the Pomegranate – coming into bloom:
Songs 6:7 – 11 Her emotions becoming mature (repeat), and her maturity in the Word. Her fruitfulness increases (the fruit trees-pomegranates, vines, nuts- are in bloom) she moves into intercession.

Jesus/ the bridegroom taught her how to develop dove’s eyes, focused on Him only. He is easily overcome by her fixed gaze and again, “like a piece of pomegranate are the temples behind your veil.”

She starts to move in spiritual authority (emotionall mature). The enemy is petrified, “army of banners.”
6:11, “I went down the garden of nuts, to see the verdure of the valley…whether the vine has budded, and the pomegranates has bloomed.”

In the Book Songs the garden is mentioned nine times, and the bride progresses from her garden, to His garden and then to ‘our’ garden. The fruit increases everytime. She mentions nuts, vineyards and pomegranates (trees full of blossoms in verse 7) – when the garden becomes the bride’s place of retreat for intercession.

Songs 7:12 “Come, my Beloved…let us see if the vine has budded, ….and the pomegranates are in bloom. There I will give you my love.”

So mature the Bride is now, she is fearless. She does not hide any longer. She calles Him! She asks Him to come with her and see if the pomegranates are in bloom (invites Him to the field and villages – to see whether there are signs of growth in the vineyards of her Beloved (she becomes a co-worker with Christ). She has matured in her love and lives a balanced life of work and quiet times with Him.

Pomegranate Juice: Sharing (Evangelism) with others – signified by the Juice of the Pomegranate:
She becomes also fearless (mature) in her love for Christ – and wants Him to join her in His fields (work for Him). In Ch 8:2 we read about the calling of the Bride, “I would bring you into the house of my mother, she who used to instruct me. I would cause you to drink of spiced wine, of the juice of my pomegranate.”

This speaks of the bride’s yearning to bring Jesus into her home church, and share with others what she learnt from Him. She wants to serve Him juice of her pomegranates – fruit was broken and juice had been pressed out means her life has been opened up – in the same way. (Red juice – sweet – is God’s grace on and in her – he can use her to serve others).

A Prophetic Act:

Vitamins supplied
A 100ml serving provide 40% of an adult’s supply of vitamin C.A glass (200ml) gives 100% of RDA of Folic acid, very much need by expecting mothers to have a baby’s brain, palate (mouth) and spinal column developed fully,is present in abundance.

  • Antioxidant polyphenols are present – example hydrolyzable tannins (punicalagins) that was shown in 38 peer-reviewed research publications (1990-2007) to have free – radical scavenging ability (anti-cancer).
Tannins are the components for reduction of oxidative stress that lead to heart disease.
Potassium, nicotinic acid (B3), 50% of the RDA of vitamins A and E. After the consumption of the juice a by-product, ellagic acid (from the ellagitannin punicalagins) is formed through metabolic activity.
  • Helpful against diseases
Heart and brain: Through LDL ‘bad cholesterol’ oxidation, the oxidative status of macrophages, foam cell formation – all steps against atherosclerosis and cardiovascular disease). A glass per day Improves blood flow to the heart by more than a third. Reduce artheric lesions, which narrows arteries and cause heart failure, reduces systolic blood pressure. Alzheimer’s: May reduce the buildup of harmful proteins associated with Alzheimer’s disease by half.
  • Arthtitis: Can prevent the onset of osteoarthritis, by inhibiting the enzyme in cartilage responsible for the damage(2007 six trials in US, Israel and Norway).
  • Diabetes: Significant trial in Israel – despite the natural sugars in the juice. Sugars are attached to unique antioxidants, which actuall make these sugars protective against atherosclerosis.
  • Anti-viral, antibacterial: Anti-microbial effects proven against dental plaque.
  • Cancer: Lymphoma – trial significant. Helps fight lung cancer, breast cancer, skin cancer. Against prostate cancer.
  • Development of fetus: Pomegranate juice is proven to be neuroprotective for the neonatal brain of a baby. Also when the umbilical cord is wrapped around the baby’s neck, lack of oxygen can result in brain damage and disability.
  • Pediatric research published an article that prove that expecting mothers should drink pomegranate juice to increase her and the baby’s free radical protection.Contact Inner Fruits for freshly frozen Pom-juice (0861 779977) – posted on ice-packs.
